North Tyneside’s Own Colliery Band

Backworth Colliery Band was formed in 1886 as part of the social life of the Backworth collieries, whose pit villages included Backworth, Shiremoor, Holywell, East Holywell, Earsdon, Percy Main and Burradon. For nearly 80 years it rehearsed at the Miners’ Welfare, across the road from Backworth Club.

Today the band rehearses at Backworth Club on Monday and Thursday evenings, with the Training Band on Mondays from 6pm to 7pm, and plays all over North Tyneside, from Whitley Bay and Tynemouth to North Shields, Wallsend and Killingworth.

Contest roots

A band from Backworth is recorded at a contest in North Shields in 1878. In 1902 the band won a North Shields contest and was placed at Tynemouth, and it hosted brass band contests of its own in Backworth in 1898 and 1902. See the full story on our history page.

The band is amateur and self-funding, so every fee goes back into instruments, music and the Training Band.
