Music to Say Goodbye

In the North East’s mining communities, a brass band has long been part of saying goodbye. Backworth Colliery Band plays at funerals and memorial services across the region, at churches, crematoria and gravesides, and leads processions with the dignity the day deserves.

We can play hymns for everyone to sing, music as people arrive and leave, and the Last Post and Reveille on a solo cornet. Families often ask for hymns such as Abide With Me, Crimond or Gresford, the miners’ hymn. Tell us what you would like and we will let you know what we can play.

Weekday services

Funerals are often arranged at short notice and held on weekdays. Many of our players work, so a weekday daytime service can be difficult for the full band, but our retired members can often put out a smaller group. Get in touch as soon as you have a date and we will tell you honestly what we can do.

Funeral directors

Funeral directors are welcome to contact us on a family’s behalf. Send the date, time and place, the order of service if it is ready, and whether a full band, a smaller group or a solo cornet is wanted.

Booking

Every booking is priced individually, depending on the service, the location, the music and the number of players. The band is amateur and self-funding, so every fee goes back into instruments, music and the Training Band.
