Wedding Brass Band in Northumberland

Castles, coast and village churches: music for your Northumberland wedding.

Northumberland Weddings

From Bamburgh to the Tyne Valley

Northumberland is made for a brass band wedding. The sound fills a village church, carries across a castle lawn and gives your guests a welcome they will remember.

Backworth Colliery Band was formed in 1886 among the pits of the Northumberland coalfield, and still travels the county for shows, galas and celebrations. In July 2007 fifteen of its players welcomed the guests at a private wedding at Bamburgh Castle.

Your Northumberland Wedding

Music for the ceremony, the photographs and the arrival.

The Ceremony

Processional and recessional music, hymns pitched for singing, and music while the register is signed.

Out of Doors

Brass carries well outside: music on the lawn or in the courtyard while your guests gather and the photographs are taken.

The Right Line-up

Around ten players suit most churches; fifteen played outside Bamburgh Castle; the full band suits a large outdoor celebration.

Planning

Planning a Northumberland Wedding

  1. Tell us about the venueA church, a castle, a country house or a marquee: where the band will sit or stand, and whether it will be indoors or out.
  2. Plan for the weatherOutdoors, the players need cover from rain for themselves and their music, so a sheltered spot nearby makes a good plan B.
  3. Choose the momentsAs your guests arrive, the entrance, the hymns, the signing of the register, the walk out and a fanfare at the reception.
  4. Pick the musicFrom hymns and the Wedding March to film music and pop: the band plays Blinding Lights as happily as I Dreamed a Dream.
  5. Leave the timings to usWe agree with your church or venue when the band will play, and talk to your organist about keys and verses for the hymns.

From the archive

Bamburgh Castle, July 2007. The band was asked to play outside the castle before and after a private wedding, and to sound a fanfare. The Musical Director met the bride’s family to choose the music, and fifteen players made the trip: Geordie favourites to welcome the guests before the ceremony, more upbeat music afterwards, and a fanfare from the cornet section.

Across the county, the band has played the Glendale, Allendale, Slaley and Warkworth shows, the Hexham bandstand and the Bedlington Festival. See more of the band in Northumberland.

Booking

Every booking is priced individually, depending on the event, the location, the music and the number of players. The band is amateur and self-funding, so every fee goes back into instruments, music and the Training Band. Tell us about your event through the enquiry form and we will come back to you with a quote.

Questions about Northumberland weddings

Will you travel to the north of the county?

Yes. The band has played at Bamburgh Castle and at shows from Glendale to Allendale. Tell us where your wedding is when you get in touch.

Can you play outside at a castle or country house?

Yes. Brass carries well outdoors, and the band plays outside at shows, galas and parades. If rain is likely, the players will need some cover for themselves and their music.

How many players do we need?

Around ten players suit most churches and smaller venues. Fifteen played outside Bamburgh Castle, and the full band, around 25 players, suits a large outdoor celebration. Tell us about your venue and we will suggest a line-up.

Can we choose the music?

Yes. Tell us what you would like for the entrance, the signing of the register and the walk out. If you have a special piece in mind, ask: the band has arranged music specially for couples before.

Do you need power or a sound system?

No. A brass band plays without amplification, so we just need space for the players to sit or stand.

How far ahead should we book?

As soon as you have a date. Summer Saturdays are busy for weddings and for the band, with shows, galas and contests, so the earlier you get in touch, the better the chance that we are free.
