It is with sadness that we announce our Musical Director, Chris Travis, will be stepping down from his role after Christmas.
We’d like to thank Chris for the time, commitment and musical leadership he has given to Backworth Colliery Band. We’re extremely grateful for everything he has contributed and wish him all the very best for the future.
As one chapter comes to an end, we now begin the search for the person who will take the baton and lead Backworth into its next.
Musical Director vacancy
We’re looking for someone who can provide strong musical leadership while maintaining the positive, enjoyable and supportive atmosphere of the band.
- Where: Backworth, North Tyneside
- Rehearsals: Monday and Thursday, 7:30pm–9:30pm
- Applications close: 20 November 2026
- Auditions: weeks commencing 8 and 15 December 2026, during our normal Monday and Thursday rehearsals
The audition
Rather than a formal interview, shortlisted candidates will be invited to work with the band. The audition will include:
- Area test piece: an agreed section or movement
- Band choice: a piece selected by the band
- Own choice: a piece chosen by the candidate
There’ll then be an informal opportunity to chat with the band and committee, ask and answer questions and, most importantly, see whether we’re the right fit for each other.
We welcome applications from experienced Musical Directors as well as ambitious conductors ready to take the next step.
